Elijah W. Israel Correspondence, 1862-1864

Elijah Whitney Israel (b. ca. 1839) was born in Johnson County, Indiana, but later moved to Rensselaer, Jasper County Indiana twhere he made his living as a farmer.  He was married to Francis Israel, and they had several children.  In August, 1862, he enlisted in Company A, 87th Indiana Regiment. He served as a private, then later as first sergeant. He was shot in the head and killed at the Battle of Chickamauga on September 19, 1863.
