Biography:

The Boltons were a farm family from Guilford County. James A. Bolton (b. ca. 1833) served as a private in Co. A, 10th Battalion NC Heavy Artillery. According to the information recorded in the Census of 1860, Lydia Bolton wasn’t able to read or write, and it is possible that she had someone write the letter for her. James and Lydia Bolton survived the war and at the time of the 1870 census were living on their Guilford County farm with their four children.
