Biography:
F. M. Martin (b. ca. 1832) was a Laurens District farmhand. He enlisted at Lightwood Knot Springs as a private in Co. L, 1st South Carolina Infantry (Gregg’s) in September 1861. He was wounded at Spottsylvania on May 12, 1864. He soon died of the effects of his wounds while a prisoner of war on May 26, 1864. He was married to Abigail Martin (b. ca. 1833), and together they had a daughter named Mary E. Martin (b. ca. 1859). F. M. was a relative, possibly a cousin, to John M. Culbertson.
