William A. Martin Papers, 1862-1864

William A. Martin (b. ca. 1837) belonged to a farm family from Anderson District, South Carolina and served as a sergeant in Co. G, 22nd South Carolina Infantry. Around 1861, Martin married Rebecca E. (Emma) Fielding (b. ca. 1837) and the couple had one child, Henry (b. ca. 1862). Martin’s service records indicate that he became a “casualty of war” near Petersburg, Virginia on July 30, 1864, the day of the Petersburg Mine Explosion, which killed or wounded 216 members of his regiment. In 1880, Rebecca and Henry were living in the houseold of her widowed mother, Anna Fielding. This collection consists of seven letters written by William A. Martin to his wife, two letters from Rebecca E. Martin to William, and one letter to William from his older brother, Warren J. Martin (b. ca. 1828), who served with him in Co. G, 22nd SC. Like William, Warren was detailed as a teamster for the regiment during part of his service.
