James mustered into service on November 1, 1861 and was eventually promoted to corporal. He was captured on October 12, 1863, confined at Richmond before being transferred to Andersonville prison camp in Georgia, where he died on April 20, 1864 (his service records mistakenly record that he mustered out on October 31, 1864 at the end of his three-year enlistment).
