November the 4th 1863 Mary J. Lister my
dear Companion through the mercy of a
kind god I am permited to rite you a
few more lines witch leave me well
Hopen thay may Come safe to your hand
And find you all well and doing well
This makes the forth leter I hav rote to
you and I havent received na[?]er one f
From you we bin left home a month
To day and I think it hard that I Cant
Hear from home once a month you pertend
To be verry mutch a posed to my leaving
Home but it dosent prove it Jef Bruce
And Eadward dill and [james?] Crain Can
All get leters and every body but me
And I dont think I will rite our nother
one untill I get one from you I cant

thay ar killen a good meny men in sumter
we hav pirty hard times hear we dont
hav eny thing fit to eat we draw corn
meal sometimes it is so bad and musty
that [brin?] wodent eat it and bacon
So Strong we cant harly eat it we
we render the most of it up and
Shorten our musty bred with it and
make Cofy out of meal so shorten [?]
bred and meall cofy is our living ex cept
once a weak we draw a mes of flour we
hav to stand picket ever third nite
we rest to nites and stand one I think
Jefs helth is im proveing alittle sens
I first Come hear it will come his tim
for a furlo in about to r three weaks
And I want John and william to hav

Sun it good and dry and send me some
