Forsyth county N.C. May the 2nd 1864
Dear Brother, I seat myself this eavning
to pen you a fiew lines to inform you
that I am Tolerable well I have a
verry bad cough and hurting in my brest
I can be about but not to do much
worke the rest of the family is all
well & the people generaly. I have no
news of much importance to wright I have
planted about twenty acres in corn and
am not quite done yet It keeps so
wet I cant plant the bottoms It rains
every day or so. wheat look verry sorry
as yet It is to wet for it It turned
yellow for the last fiew days as if it
was going to take the rust oats there
will be but fiew made the rye is sorry generally
We havenot been exchanged yet as I know
of and I hope will not be until the cropp
is made for I think we are needed
here wors than in the army It looks at

this time if we arenot blessed with
good cropps the ware is bound to stop
but if we can get something to eat and
wear it ma last a hundred years I
think not short of fifty at the least
the hot head secess about here glory
in the duration of the ware as long
as they can keep out. god help the
contentions ignorant creturs for they need
it perhaps they will receive their reward
in diew time I gess you can tell by
this time something about prison and
the guard house I have kill thirty
squirrels two hawks and a crow but I am
about out of powder If you get a chance
to send any and can get some I wish
you to send it to me the first opportunity
I can keep myself in meat killing squirles
till chickens come in I will close excuse me
for not wrighting sooner so no more but
yours etc
