Randolph County
Hon Z. B. Vance Gov of NC; Sir I desire some
instruction of you to your excellency I am laboaring
under the afflicting hand of an allwise providence from
which I have labored from infancy my affliction is
Myopy my sight is so short that I cant see to shoot
I cannotsee the sight of no gun the Malitia officers
of my district hav generally bin well aquainted with
mee tha thought proper never to enroll me for Military
service untill this war broke out tha then enrolled
my name on their list in March last the draft
I went before the Regamental board tha Released
mee from standing my draft I then come under
the first conscript act age 32 years I then went to the camp of
instruction at the first call in July last I was there
released and sent home since that time I have bin
called back again and went through another exam
ination and reced a certificate reads a follows

Camp Homes October the 17th 1862
I certify on honer that I have carefully examed
Isaiah K Craven Col Foushee 64 Regiment NC
Malitia and find him to be incompetent of perform
ing the duties of a Soldier because of Myoped
Approved D A Vogt Asst Surgeon
Peter Mallett Major and A A G P CSA; P CSA
The foregoing is a true coppy of my Surtificate
you will please send mee whether my surtificate
will exempt mee from Military servis at home
as well as in the army; I can give you evidence
of the for going form as good authority as you
may require if this does not ssffice; your hum sevent
Isaiah,K,Craven
you will find enclose in this twenty five cents to pay
postage
