December the 8th 1862

Gov Z. B. Vance we the under Seigned
implore your exelancy to intercede for
us the citizens of Burk County with the
Legislature to pass an act for the more sure
prompt and cheap Supply of Salt for the
County of Burk Thomas G. Walton got in
as Salt agent for the County he advurtised
the people to come in to Morgonton thurs-
day the 4th of December to receiv their
Salt the people had thier hogs fat redy
to kill and Corn Scarce but Thomas G
Walton refused to let them have more
then three pound for each member of
the familey and the people could not
git Salt to Salt their poark and here
was Sharks that thought the had
the people pend So that they ware bound
to let them have thir poark for lack of Salt
and let thir own famileys Suffer
but that was not all the evil of
the Strategem here Stood Women
[page 2]
thinly Clad the wives of our Suffering
Soilgers in the mud in front of Thomas
G Waltons Salt House from early in the
morning till near night eight teen miles
from home a waiting till Thomas G Walton
could weigh out Salt for a hole County
and that is not all the evle Thomas G
Walton will hire a wagoner to hall fifty
Bushels of Salt he gives hime ten Buschels
for halling the fifty now the Salt at Salt
Ville Va is $150 per Buishel [1] but Thomas G
Walton prices the Salt $5 per Buishel then Says
he paid $50 for halling forty Buishels then
ads that fifty to the $60 that the forty Buishels
cost at Salt Ville makes $110 there Sells the
Salt at five dollars per Buishel which makes
40 Buishels Bring $200 that leves Thomas
G Walton $90 to put in his own pocket
for weighing 40 Buishels But I would suggest
a better plan for the poor of Burk County that
is to count the cost on ten Buisels at Salt Ville
on ten Buishels fifteen dollars on the ten
Buishels paid to the waggoner add that fifteen
dollars to the $60 that the 40 Buishels costs
[page 3]
at Salt Ville Va makes the Salt worth
$187 ½ [2] per Buishel in Burk County now add
12 ½ cents on the buishel for waistage than makes
the Salt worth two dollars per Bushel now add
25 cents for the trouble of the Salt agent on
each Buishel that makes the Salt two dollars
and twenty five cents per Buishel and the
Waggoner Still got his ten Buishels of Salt
for halling the 50 Buishels now the wagoner
is as well off and the people pays two dollars
and 25 cents in place of give dollars per
Buishel now pass an act for the people to
elect a County Salt agent for the County
whoes duty it Shall be to take bond and
Security of School district agents who Shall
be elected by the people of the district
and be Bound to have a Supply of Salt
for their district against the first of
December then the people will have a
Supply of Salt in their own district and
have it at two dollars and twenty five cents
per Buishel now we pray you excelency
to have an act pased to accomplish the above
plan and you will doe much for the poor
