[Harrington served in Co. G, 38th NC Inf. He was elected 3rd lieutenant in his company on April 18, 1862, wounded in the right thigh at Mechanicsville on June 26, 1862, promoted to 1st lieutentant on October 21, reported absent wounded in January and February 1863, and resigned on March 7 by reason of disability.]

Gov Vance as I have been in the
army for the last eighteen months & at
the Battle before Richmond I got a
severe wound through the right thigh near
the body from that time I have not been
the able for active Service in the field &
on the 26th of march I Sent my resignation
up on disability & it was excepted & I
am now at home & am not able to work
& I see an act of Congress says the clerks
in the comissarys & quarter masters depart
-ment shall be put in the field & disabled
Soldiers put in thier places I think I can
fill one of those palces I want some
place of the kind I want all the men
that is able for active service to be in the
field I think it is the duty of all able
bodied men to be in service I am willing
to do any thing that I can to render
service to my county that I am able
to do

I am willing & to be an [????????] officer or
conscripte or deserter catcher or any thing that
I can do that will render service to the
confedracy or station me at any point as
a guard for I cant march at all from
the effects of this gun shoot I know
that you can give me something of the kind
to do you can commsiion me as a enroling
officer if you pleas as to recommendations
I can give you any you want for the molitia
officers do not trie to catch the men at all
if you will give me commisions as an
enroleing officer I will take agood many
that has never been in service that are
able men or give me a clerks place in
any of those places & I will fill them
I beg for one of those favoes at your
hands if I was not wounded I wold
not aske this favor of you but I am
not able to work so her am I to supp
ort my family with out something that
I can do give me one of those places
for I do not want to beg for a living
