[At the time of the 1860 Census, Tate (b. ca. 1799) was a wealthy retired physician. His son, H. A. Tate (b. ca. 1843), served in Co. D, 11th NC Inf. (the Bethel Regiment). H. A. Tate’s service records indicate he died of his wounds on August 25, 1863.]

Dear Sir. My youngest Son Hugh
Alexander Tate was wounded in the Battle of
Gettysburg on the 3rd day of the Fight &
I have heard nothing from him since
the 27 of July – A copy of which I send
you, his right leg was amputated
above the Knee & was doing as well as could
be expected – I hav written sevral letter
since that time but hav not recived
an anser & L[????] from W Caldwel
that you had sueceeded in getting A
full reply to your letters through Flag
of Truce & that you will a gain write
to Gettysburg upon the subject of his sons
I request you also to write for me &
find out if he is still at the Battle
Field Hosptial if he has recoverd &
if so is he still ther or to what plase
has he been removd &c
