Dear wife, I embrace this opportunity
of writing [to you?] as perhapse it may be [1]
the only chance I will have for some time
hence my health is not verry good as I
have the deorear & has had for several
days but I am going about & does my
duty. I am verry anxious to hear from
home as I have not heared since I left
I have ben looking for a letter from you
for some days but have not received any
at all. I have no newse to write worth
your attention. I suppose you get all the
newse in your paper that is of any
importance. yesterday was the first
Sunday in six that we have not moved
we are still where we have ben for the
last week (our pickett gets water from
a cistern but we haul from the river
about two miles for the camp use)
There is preperations making now for us
to move I suppose in the direction of vicks
burg where we will have a lively time of
it no doubt.
[Page 2]
as the cannons this morning are testifying
the yankees commenced cannonading vicks
burg last weadnsday or Thursday was a week
ago & never stoped until last friday & they
have commenced again this morning. the
lates news we have from vicksburg is
favourable, but Grant has a large force [2]
round about there & we have got to move
him. I think Johnston is nearly ready
to make a move & then you will hear a
tail prehaps such an one has not bin
told since the war commenced, as I have
not received any letter from you I will
not write much at this time you must
write me all about home & the things
generally. give me the newse of the neighborhood
I do not expect to write again until I get
a letter from you, write often I do not know
where I may be but direct to Jackson as be
-fore & they will follow me. give my love
to the children & accept aportion for
your
self so I remain yours as ever
