S C James Island near Charlesto
Dear brother thrue the kind
merces of an all wise god I am spard
tell this time and to take my
pen in hand to in form you
that I am well at this time
hopen when thes few lines
comes to hand thay may find
you all well I receved your
kind leter yesterday that
was dated the 3 of this instent
and was glad to hear from
you all I can tel you that
our compney was in aclose place
yesterday this ridgment was oder
out to go to the batel field
we marched about 1 mile and
was halted then Fosters compney
was put on picket we mar
ched about 2 miles fother then
we scaterd thrue the woods
and then the fite began and
then we was order to go nerer
the fite we marched down
and then we had to scater
out again and we got in
about 2 hundred yardes

of the fite and the bumes
fel all round us I never saw
dogin before we all Jest fell
rite flat every time we herd
them comin one busted rite at
me I felt the steme of
hit non of our compney was
hert But we had to leve that
place or thay wood haf burn us
to deth I never herd guns fired
before hit was wors than eney
starm ever you herd our los
was 65 kiled and wounded
the los of the enemy is not
knone out pickets was close
anuf to the yankes last nite
to her them talk thay herd on
of them say our men give
them [S?]ut I was thankful
that our compney com of so well
Dear brother stay at home as
long as you can for a solger
has a hard time pray for us
that we may be blest to git
to com home all the rest of
boys is well and wood like to
