First of August Settin down near
Richman
Well as I am goin to write a
family letter I shant say deer
no one, without its deer family
and bein as are the head of the
springs family I shall send it
to you (that is Sister) well it
apears that you all is quit ritin
to me but still I writes to you
all, you all may rit to me
but yer letter dont come here
well I dont [?]ur so much
bein as Im in good health
agin, well I can tell you one
thing, Lewis wants to get out
of the sarvice as bad as he
wanted to get in but I dont
reckin he will get out as easy
as he got in well they talk about
peace here a goodeal but if you
had hearn the cannon

last night that I did you would
have thought there want much peace
for some body, it commenced a
bout midnight and continued three
hours we hant hearn what twas
about yet, but I spect twas
the yanks a tryin to wake up our
boys down thar our boys is gettin
so that they wont get up out
of their beds for the scamps, they
wait til mornin, than they gets
up a[s] the yanks skedaddles under
ther gun boats, well we been away
13 monts now, and I reckin you
say I knows jimmy wants to see
all mighty bad, but I spects you
all wants to see me as bad as I
wants to see you all but I can
tell you I wants the war to stope
for if they keep on they will get
me shot next thing any body

I am glad to say that the health
of the regt is much better now than
for wone time past, my health is better
now than it has been since we have been
at Richmond I dont think ther
is much danger of a fight here
a gain soon, but you may listen
out for old Stone Wall again
soon he has gone back to his old
fighting ground he will be after
Genl Pope soon and will whip him
too, for he can do it certain,
the nonconscripts are all going
to start home in a day or too
so they carry this to you I [expect?]
you at are living high [??] [water?]
melions and fruit meleons here are
$5.00 a piece and peaches $100. [??] [1]
so we cant eat many I fear you
cant read this but it is for one
and all of you so let them all
read it if they can I will stop

Lewis received a letter from you
last night I have not got a
letter from you since Jun[?] Manning
come from home (he lost our socks) I have
written to you twice since
that one of which I am sorry
you did not get for in one was
my experience of war;
Lewis is quite unwell today
with a cold John health is
pretty good I am sorry that
the mail time is so difrant
we sometimes get letter her two month
old write again for [hop?] it
will come good bye
