Dear Orrin
We received a letter from
Sargent John E [Logigee?] Jarvis
Gen Hospital Ward 14 Baltimore Md
stateing that Alvin was wounded
in the breast and arme the
evening of the 1st of March
and died the 7 of the same
month with the Lock Jaw he
sad he was treated well had good
care but suffered greatly it is
hard to think that we shal never
see him againe but I suppose
it is so he has given his life
for his Country it is heart rending
but we must submit to the
will of God his ways are right not
ours but it does seem hard but
we must hope he is better off he will have
none of there troubles & ancieties
that we have to undergo hear below

I received yours of the 27 to
day you spoke of our going down
to Falmouth [1] to day we could not
vary well I buy a little Hay
once and a while spent 2 days this
week have sold that Pratt land
done the writings I have not done
any Farming yet I do not feel
as though I could do a great lot
of Farming your mother got
home from Portland yesterday
she is about sick we have heard
rather hard news from Harrison
Slemmonds [Lomm?] is dead died
varry suddin do not know what
ailed him. Lizie Haskett is dead
died with the throat distemper
and Tristram Noyes youngest child
died with the same 3 funerals
in 3 days in succession in that
neighbourhood life is un certain
it stands us to be also readdy.

Dear Orrin how glad I
should have been to gone to
Falmouth yesterday yes Orrin how
happy I should have been to have
seen you taken into the church
if Alvin had been alive and well
but as it is I could not come my heart
is so near braking. I feel quite sick
this morning come home as often
as you can Mother
we are going to Portland this
week and we shall call to see if
we cant go to to get some
cloths
