Saturday April 17th 1863

Dear Sister it is With pleasure that
I Sit down to answer your kind letter that
I recieved last tuesday it was written March 19th
dear Sister i do not no What to Write for i
have been in the Hospital 5 Weeks to day
but i Will try and Write a few lines to you
all but dear Sister my head is all confused
for the doctor that doctors me came in one
Morning and the first thing that he Said
Was i am agoin to send you home and told
the Nurse to carry my name down to the
head doctor for examination and you
Will Shure go home Well Sarah that was
the first time that i have thought of
any such thing as goin home before the regtt
Went but just as soon as the Captain
heard about it he came and see me and
has not been to see me but twise since i
have been in here he come in and did
not stop but a minit and then Went
out and shut the door and come rite in
again and spoke about it and appeared
to be mad because i had not notified
him about it and he says to me 3 or 4 times
guess that you will be able to come to
Camp in a few days Wont you and i never
made any answer to it and Says he i guess
that i Will go down and tell dr Brownell
he is the head Surgon Well i found out
sence that he did go to him and My
Name was not called for Examination
and when the nurse toll my doctor about
the Capain he appeared to be mad about
it and Says he your Capain has nothing

to do With you for you are under
my care now and will not be fit to
go in the field again and you never
Was fit to come out here in the first place
and the next time that your Captain
comes here you send him down to me for i
Want to see him for the head doctor is
not the one to go to to find out What
the matter is with you but the head
doctor is the one that discharges the men
and you can see that Sholdier Straps will
make a man a dam mean Cuss but dear
Sister i shall not come home now at any
rate but the[y] keeps a saying that i shall not
go back to Camp but Sarah i have gut just
one of the neatest little rooms that you ever see

But dear Sister the doctor
was just in here and he is one of the best
men you ever see George has been able to go
to the Company for over a week but he has
been staying With me and told the doctor
this Morning that he wanted to go to camp
and James Monroe and Sam Carter and
Bill Blood was in here and says i doctor
What are you agoin to do With me and he looked
at me a minit and says he i am goin to
try and send you home and he had me
Stand up and he felt of me a little
but he did not say much only he said
that I was hurt but If they discharge
me i shall not get home much before
the rest of the boys do if any by What
they said and I was glad that they was
in here to hear What the doctor said to
me for they Will not have any Chance

to Say that I played of and made it
all to get home supposeing that I do get my
discharge but my dear Friends I do not Want
you should worry about me for I enjoy myself
verry well Where I am but I expect to get
some money from Father if he gut the letter
that I wrote and sent it and if you have
not sent it please send us Some for the
boys that were here said that they did not
believe that we should be paid of not till
we went home and George wanted I should
Write and tell you to send him some
you had better send it to George he says
for I may not be here and he says send
it rite of for it takes so long for it to
get he had his letter sealed up befor the[y]
were here and so he Wanted I should write
in my letter George is geting readdy to go
to Camp for he is goin to day and not
Wait till Monday I am verry sorry to have
him go but I have gut Acquainted With a
lot of them in here now and so I Shall
not be lonesome More than a day or 2 but
I tell if any thing ales a fellow here he
must keep up good spirits or he is a goner
but tell Father if I am able to Work on a
Farm i will help him this summer but
i thought if i gut home i should get a
chance to drive a horse Car or some thing
of that kind but the doctor says that
the climate has as much to do With
me as any thing or he says that it does
not [??] me and for that reason it makes
me worse than i should be at home and
if they send me i hope that it Will
be soon but i do not want any of you

to tell any one of this for it will
be soon enough for folks to no it When
I get home but dont worry about me for
I dont worry any thing about it Myself
but Father if you should happen to hear
of a good place for me to work and begin
about the first July or Aug I wish that
you would get it for me for I must
go to work some where when i get home
and I am Willing to but never mind
fo I am in for goin home now and then
I am all Write tell Father to be Shure
and send Money as soon as you get this
and I must draw this to a Close and
you must make this letter do for you
all Father Mother Charley and Emerly and
Faney and all Wit[s?] my love and best Wishes
please excuse poor writeing and spelling
and poor Composeing for it is
as Well as I can do
