Camp Dennison Jan. 12th 1862

I received yours of the [25th ?] today
was glad to hear from you. but was sorey to
hear that you are still uneasy on my account
content you self if you can for I will
try and take care of my self if possible so as
to get home some time if the Lord wills it so
It is very mudy here we cannot go out with[out]
getting into the mud up to our ankles every
step and no way to get around it for it is
on all sides. We have different regulations
here than we had at camp Hutchins I will
give you a few of them so that you may know
what a soldiers life is We must be up at
6 oclock in the morning breakfast at 7 oclock
squad drill at 9 company drill at 10
and then keep tramping until noon we
then rest until 2 oclock and then go it
again. dressparade at half past 3 oclock
at 4 pclock we are done drilling for one day
go to bed at half past 9. no person can
Leave the camp without a writen pass sined
by the major Oanley two persons can have
a ferlough to leave camp at a time. When
on guard we have to be at the guard house for
24 hours and not to leave for any thing not
eaven to get our meals we are not alowed to
take our close off if we sleep we must sleep
with them on and are liable to be caled
out at any time. on the approach of the
officer of the day
We get no potatoes here
I have onley seen three potatoes since I came

here There was a funeral here to day there
has been from one to two put under every day
last week some of them died with
the smallpox and some was poisoned
the first dodge was to give them
pisoned whiskey they killed five or six
with that invention and when that would
not take they tried the poison in pies
and cakes and took about the same number
two boy in our companey came very
near going up by eating a piece of pie
that they had gave to them when they
was on guard. They did not like the
tast of it and threw it away after
eating a litle of it it came very near
being their last pie I could enjoy myself
here if you was with me that is the onley thing
in the way There is two women here that
came from Bazzeta they are in the hospital
there is one of our boys in the hospital
nigh unto death with the lungfever
I have onley seen four women since
I have been here there has been some things
thing around here pedling pies but
I did not call them women they was
dirty greasy and duch as well as ragged
I must work tomorrow I have had
one of my towels stole and one sock but
I will mak them good in the same way
I must close as it is getting dark
and I have no candle I will send you some
wood and shells that have turned to stone I pick
ed them up to day in the ravine I got wet
through while I was getting them Bine
