Dear Cousin
I received your
kind letter some time since
and was glad to hear from you
espiacly to hear that you were all
well, This leaves me well, all
the Montezuma boys are well and
harty, I hope if these few lines
are permitted to reach you that
they will find you still well
and injoying yourself in your
new home
Well Mary Jane I will try
to tell you what we are doing
We are laying at Resaca
waiting for the train to take
us on, we are going to Pulaska
Tennessee, to head off old Hood
[page 2]
It is reported that they are
seaging Athens Ala but I guess
we have enough men there eer
this to make them rase the seage
the 4th corps left here last
monday on the cars and our
Division left on wednesday and
out 1st Brigade yesterday, so I
think they will have to move out
before long, we are looking for
the train every minute for to take
us on all of our brigade but two
regiments got on last night and
left this morning I think we will
surely leave this afternoon
I expect we will have a good
ride on the cars and we will
get to see a good deal of Country
that we never saw before
We are laying about 1½ miles
from where we made the fatal
charge, but I have not got to
go out to see it yet, although
[page 3]
I would of liked very well
to have gone out, but I could
not leave for we have been
expecting to leave every minute
since we have been here, and
we have been here nearly
four days
Well Mary Jane we have
had a long march, we left
Decatur Ga one month
ago today and during that time
we have marched 381 three hundred
and eighty one miles
One day we marched over twenty
five miles, but I tell you
we lived, we had every thing
we wanted to eat, we had Pork
Potatoes both Irish and Sweet and
Honey all we wanted
Well I guess I have told you
about enough of trash for this
time.
[page 4]
I heard you had another
little brother I also heard that
I[t] was named for me, then you
