   Camp Candy, Alegany Co Mary land 
Dear Mary  I takue this opportunity to let 
you know that I am Well at present 
and hope that these few lines may 
find you ingoying the same 
bleesing  the next day after I rote 
to you Wee Came up here and Went 
in to Camp here at Candy  We have a 
very good sight here to get a 
fight for the rebbels is thick 
here  We ar Campt rit betwen 
the aleganey Mountains and 
the Potomick river  gorg is not 
very Well gust now  he is got 
a bad Cold  their is 7 regiments 
in the same neighborhood Whair 
We ar Campt all around us 
the ilenoys 39 [1] had a dispatch 
get redy to march at a moments 
Warning  We sent out 100

pickets and scouts  they have not 
come in yet all of them they Captured 
fine fat hoss fom a seshes  yesterday 
We [Went?] to New [???] and Was 
inspected by 
generel lander [2] he sed the 66 
is a bout the best he had seen 
We have som better fare than We had 
Well I hope you [??] in god helh and 
all the rest  We past over the damdest rode 
ever I saw  thier Was mountains as high 
as six trees one on top of an 
other by the rods side their is some 
of the affulst rivers in the World as We came 
a cross the potomic river the cars run over 
a stone that Was put on the track that 
Would have wade 800 lbs  the locomotive 
bounest 6 or 8 inches high from 
the track  I had the pleasure of standing gard 
the second night after We Went in to Camp 
our scouts has gust came in  tey bring good 
news  they say the sesh has all fled from romney[3]

I felt sory sorry for your pap
