Dear Mary I onc more sit down to let you know
that I am well and hope thes few lines may

Was rite bad for a few dys rast is sick
to he is getting better I cant rite mutch
to day for I have gust Caim in from
picket gard I was about 3 miles off on
the mountains over in virginea it
Was the first time for me Bill Craig
and me Wes together We Was away
on top of a high mountain garding
a road We had to hide under
som pine bushes W[e] looked to see
seshes [1] but We did not see eny
We staid out 24 hours I Was over
in virginia and got my dinr
of a seshes I think he clam to bee

to send a bullt through his head
he Wanted me to [pay?] him for
my dinner I give hel you cant
imanagin What Kind of a time We have
We live a dogs life it aint Champaign
Co but We Will have to do the best We
can now I Wish I Was at home again

Mary six months ago I did not think
that I Would bee roving over the mountains
of Western virginea When We got
here We had to pitch our tents
rit in the mud We had to cut brush
and put in our tents and
Cary straw and put in this
morning I Wuent to a house
to get my breckfast I got coffy
barfoot buckwheat Cakes some cold meat
and some raw onions for 10 cts

the life of a soldier is a drear one
but the government demands our serves
I think I Cant ingag in eny better

my letter to a Close for I feel

I made from lorrel root
