Joseph I set donn this pleasant afternoon to
Address you a few lins to let you no
That I am well at present hoping that
These few lins ma find you the same I
Received your letter wensday and was
Glad to here from you i wrote you a letter
The 21 and sent you too news papers tell
Me if you got them Joseph my dear
I have no partickulars to wright about my self or
The childrin as i told you in my other
Letter I ame glad to here you say that
you are a coming home I hope you will
be best [1] with that privlige I heard that
There was agoing to be a battle at
Winchester I hope that god in his mercy
May spair you to get safly through
I got the rings that you made fore me
And was glad to see the woork of your
hands once more my dear i was over
To the old hous yesterday and I thought
of the time you was there with me las
Joseph it seemes more like home to me there

I was up to Samuel Diltz buering he
Looked very bad he was dead 8 days the
Day he was bueryed there was about
Thre hundred to the bueryen I felt so
Bad when I seene him his name was Diltz
Isac Cobert looks very bad I dont think
He is long for this world I got the letter
you sent to frank Madan you was a
Telling him about the skippers [2] carreng a
Musket i wish one would cary you home
Well i must bring my letter to A
Close so no more at present But remains

  3. When, and by whom, page three of the letter was written is unclear. If the date is correct, it was written thirty years after the rest of the letter. The handwriting and spelling strongly suggest that it wasn’t written by Mary during the 1860s, although it is possible it was written by her, for some reason, many years later.
