home before long all the rest of the Orwell folks are
well Jim got a letter from Jane yester day or the [1]
day before & I got one from you three or four days
ago you folks all said that if our army gained
that battle at corrinth it would about end the
war but I guess we lost about as much as we
gained there at Pittsburgh landing & all on account
of drunken Officers but when Old Grant got
whipped sober he give the rebles fits s[t]ill if Buel
had not come up just as he did the rebles
would have drove him into the river but
our folks drove them back & that is about but I guess
they the rebles will have to take it now at
corrinth & yorktown to I hope we can whip
[page 2]
them there & then I shall think the war is all
Most done still they may fight for some time
after that we have not got our pay yet

dollar to day & hope that by the time you get this
used up I shall have my pay to send you
nothing more at present but I remain yours
