My Dear Wife
It is with pleasure
that I now take this opportunity of writing
you a few lines more I am well &
hope these few lines will find you the
same I wrote you a letter when we
were in Burlington but could not send
it becaus there was no Government
Post Office there so I thought I would
write you a few lines & put both letters
in an envelop & send them we are
now thirty miles from Franklin
& capt Bowes compeny catched up
with us last night & the captains
got a dispatch to remain here
till further orders I dont know
[page 2]
what it is for there is lots of Bush
whackers here about there was 18
fetched into this place last night
I dont know what will be done
with them but I supose sent to
camp Chase I wish they would hang
them the folks are all secesh here
our boys went out & killed five little
pigs yesterday evening I had a piece
of one this morning it tasted first
rait some of our boys were sent
out on picket gard today I shouldent
wonder if we were kept here to
gard this road I just heard that
half of the forces are coming back
here from Franklin becaus they
cant get Provision enough there
to keep them there must be a big
army the for the road is lined
with teams all the time they are
hawling provision to the army we
[page 3]
dont hear any war news now days
I dont know what is going on atall
We are in hopes to get to go out and
get a chance to hunt bushwhackers
in a few days we dont feel
much like taking them prisoners
& the amount of the business is they
never should be taken prisoners
but shot where ever found it is
the only way to deal with them &
I wish it was the way our folks
would deal with them I never
have stolen any thing sence I
been in here but we wont starve
now if we can get by going & taking
it from the secesh I expect it will
be pretty hard to get provision here
now but we will have enough
to eat if it is in the country to
be had if these folks had not seceded
we would not have had to fight
[page 4]
them & now as it is we wont spare
them much but there is a good many
that I am sorry for here
Well I must stop writing
for this time so good bye for this
time yours as Ever
