Camp at Jones cross roads MD
July 12th 1863

My Dear Wife
It is with pleasure that I now
sit down to write you a few
lines to let you know that I
am well and hope these few lines
will find you in the same state
of health I recd yesterday one
letter from you daited the 21st of June
you complain of not getting any
letters of me well I expect I am
some to blame but sence the 19th of
of June we have been fighting
almost evry day you say others
get letters & I have written to you
I have been in the advance
of the army about all the time
the cavalry have done a great
[page 2]
deal of work sence we got up
here we were with Kilpatrick
the 21st of July when he took the [mistake for June 21]
rebs waggon train and one
thousand prisoners we fight
evry day are just back
from the front to get forage
now expect to get orders
to go in again in a few
minuts I expect there
will be a very hard fight
here soon evry soldier is
anxious to fight now we
would rather fight here then
in VA do not think I
have forgot you but if you
do not get letters you may
know we are at work
I think of home the last thing
when I lay down at night
and the first thing in the
morning I am in hopes
this war will end soon
[page 3]
and then those that go
through safe will have
a chance to go home once
more but I must close
now so keep up good
courage and hope for the
best yours as ever
