Camp Near Petersburg 
		       August 1st /64 
       Dear Mother 
	        it is With Plesure 
that I address you to Day to 
let you now that I am well 
and I hope these few lines will 
find you the Same  it is so very 
Warm that it is almost a impossbility 
to live  I was verry sorry to hear that 
Lyman was sick  I Would like 
to hear from him,  Mother I received 
your letter on the 30 of July /64  I was 
verry glad to hear from you and hear 
that you Was Well,  Mother we have 
had averry hard march sence I ritten 
to you  We Went from Petersburg and 
crossed the James river  We had quite 
alittle fight  We Captured 4 sixety four 
of pound canons  that is they shot A 
64 lb shot

 We captured about one hundard 
Prisoners and then we marched 
Back to Petersburg and took the frunnt 
line and the Next morning We 
Blowed up arebel fort  [1] the fort had 
18 Guns in it and one Bregade of 
troops and they wont but four left 
to tell the tail  When the fourt 
went up our canons all opened along 
the Whole line and it jard the 
Earth so that chunks of our Earth 
Works fell down.  the air was full of 
shells  I cant write Eny more 
to Day fur we shall move in  
afew hours  But the plase is Not 
Nowen as yet as you told me 
Excuse this short letter and I will 
try and Do Better for the future
