HEAD-QUARTERS [1]
Second Reg’t Berdan’s U. S. Sharpshooters, [2]
Camp [3] Near Petersburg Va
November 26, 1864
Friend George
Your letter was duly received and
found me as usual all right Things move along in the
same monotonous way and it is impossible for me to think
of enough to write a half way decent letter I must tell
you however about our great Thanksgiving Dinner
that the papers have been blowing about for the last few
weeks For our company of Seventeen men we received
one small Turkey one pie a half dozen Cookies three or four
water crackers and a piece of cheese Dont you think we “poor
Soldiers” Should be thankfull to our kind friends at home
who so generously donated it I presume there was enough
sent for every man a good dinner but if our friends
intended that the men in the ranks should have the benefit
of it it was a miserable failure The boys in the company
are all right Pete says he is going to write you a letter
I have got the blues and wont attempt to write anymore
hoping to hear from you soon I am yours &c
Wm Lytle
