Camp near Whiteoak Church
Va. May 23the 1863
Dear sister I take
the presant opertunity to
adress a few lines to you
to acknowledge the received
of your kind letter which
came to hand on the
21st ist and was verry
pleased to hear that you

you it will find you
enjoying good health
and pleasure. There hand [1]

we are all quiet in our
old Camp but I think
we will do something
for long if we do make
a move you will find
[page 2]
it out about as soon
in the papers as we will
know. but I think that
our army is not soficiant
here to atact the Johney
Rebs here any more. our
Fighting Joe [2] is plenting
seage guns and morders
at this side of the River
to shell the enamy out
of there fortifications beyond
fredricksburg. and if he
makes another strike on
them I hope he will sucseed
and drive the rebs double quick
in to Richmond. we had
a nise little duel wiht [with]
them and I think if
we had stuck to it a
little longer we would
have whiped them sevearly
[page 3]
Dear sister I seen in
your letter that you troubell
yourself about me sometime
but that is of no use
I am well enough
satisfied here and if I wasent
satisfied it wouldend be
any use I haf to stay here
until my time is up if
I live so long and keep
my health not unless
the war should be setted
sooner. The weather is
verry warm here it is
about as warm here
now as it is in our
home in Schuylkill
County in the verry
hottest time and the things
are growing verry nice the
peaches are a bout as large
good sized Jerry [3] and so is
the appells and the trees are
thick full of them
[page 4]
I think I will close for this
time I do not know much
to write if I was with you
I could talk agread deal more
then I can write I haf to
write so many letters and
I get dired of it and
we have a verry poor way
to write here we haf to use
our knees for our writeing
desk and dont go as easy to
write as if we was at home whare
we could set down to a comfortable
plais at home. I sent my best
