Camp near Berry Ville Va.
Sept 14th 1864
Dear Sister
I received your kind and wellcom
letter to night and was verry
glad indeed to hear from you
onst more for it had been
a longtime sins I heard from you
I wrote to you a long time ago
and hadent received an answer
till to night also I Should
have writen to you long ago
but I was determined not
to write till I would get a
letter from you first if it
would be till my time was
expired I thought I could
wait as long as you could
if I receive a letter from you
I always answer it miediately
if there is any chance at all
to do so

but I find it hand the
Same with you at home
and you have it far more
conveniant to write then I
have. I will excuse you for
this time but I hope you
answer sooner after this.
Dear Sister as far as war news
are concerned there hand a gread deal
at this time. yesderday the second
Division of our Corps and some
Cavelry force went out in
the direction of Winchester
and thay dident proseed a gred
ways untill thay met the
rebs. and hada Small fight
with them and last night
thay come back to camp again
every thing is quiet now
we have got very good times
now days we are encampt
in a rich country we can get

plenty of forage and froots
are verry plenty such as apples
and peaches this is the greatest
farming country in Virginia
but we are sweeping it of
its contents. this Army sins we
are in this Shanandoh Valley
has butchert thousands and
tens of thousands of Sheep we
have muton almost every day
I have eate more muton the
last two month then I ever
did in my life almost
every farmer has from a
hundred to a hundred and fifty
head of sheep and we kleen
them out as we go and a gread
many barns and wheet stacks
gets burnd down and we have
also took a gread many
horses off thoes farmers

& one of our fellows asked
an old farmer how he liked
the yanks he said he used
to like them but he dident
any more for thay was
so bad that thay took every thing
he had that thay even went
thrue his house and all his
provision hed had.
our Regiments time is almost
expired only about eight days
more but I have about
eleven month to serve yacht
also I think the war will be
over before my time expires
Dear Sister I am enjoying verry
good health at presant and hope
you are enjoying the same good
Blessing I sent my love to
Mother and hope to hear from her
Soon So no more at presant
I will remain your
