[1] Midletown Oct. 25 to day I received a letter From
Sister Catharine but I have got no time to answer it today
enclosed [you?] will [find?] [?] [dollars?] I am well
and hope you are the same

Camp near Midleton Va Oct 21
Dear Mother
I received your kind and most
wellcom letter yesderday and
was verry glad to hear that you
are well we have again had
a gread fight with the rebs
on the morning of the 19th inst [2]
the enomy serprised the 8th
and 19th Army Corps
about day break they broke
thrue the picket line and
for our men got in line
the enomy was in there camp
shootin and bayonetain them
in there tents and then the
two corps above mentioned
Started on the skedadle our
corps beeing formed on our
might flank (where the enomy
dident attact) and immedia
tely

marched to the senter
where the other two Corps
was on the skedadle
and checked the enomy while
we were getting the train
out of dainger we had to
bee in a gread hurry to get
out or we would been all
captured thay had us flanked
on both flanks and also come
on a full jump in front
bullets were wizzing over our
Head Quarters from three
diferant directions wen
we was packing the wagons
and we was obliged to
leave a fiew artickles such
a scesdadle I never seen
sins I am
in the army. our men retreated
about three miles then our
General Sheridan come up

he had been absant wen
this row commanced he soon
changed the thing he about
faced our lines and drove
the rebels beyond where
they attacted us and captured
fourtynine pieses of artillery
and all there ambulance and
wagon train and also
a large number of
prisoners. we are now encampt
on the same ground where
we had been campt for
the fight but it looks
a little differant
now then it did before the
fight the fields are coverd
with graves of our and
the enomys men and
dead Horses literaly
cuver the ground in
several differant plaises

our Brigade commander
got wounded and also our
A.A.G. we lost verry
heavy both in men and
officers in our Brigade
Charles Kulb [3] of our
company is killed and
David Landback is suposed
wounded he is among the
missing
I am well at presant and
I hope this will find you
all the same
Dear Mother I hope you
will remember me in your
prayer and I will do the same
in return for you
so no more at presant
