Camp near Petersburg Va Dec 5the 1864
Dear Sister
I received your kind and wellcome letter
a fiew days ago and hadent time to answer
it any sooner on account of us beeing on a
move we have left the Shanandoha Valley
and are onst more in the army of the
Potomac where we have long been exspected
to go we arrived here on the third inst and
are now in the camp of the 5th Corps
we relieved them last night thay had
verry good winter quarters build and we are
in them now and probably we will stay
here all winter maybe not it is hard to
tell we was shiped on the railroad from
Winchester to Washington there we took transportation
on the Potomac and come to City Point we was
on the Boad fourty eight hours the first nights
we was on board of the boad a man got up
and walked along on the boad and wen
he got to the banalster he stooped and went
right thrue under it and fell over board
I was on gard right clost to where he went

in but I could not save him
for I had nothing long enough for himd
to ketch a hold of the poor fellow
come on top of the water twist and
asked which way to come but dident go
far till he went down again and that was
the last for him in this world that was
all the falt of whiskey he was drunk or
he wouldend have stumbeld in.
we are campt near where we was five month
ago wen we left here only about two mile
from the spot but there has been considerable
chainges maid sins there is a new railroad
here thrue the wilderniss where our picket
line was then our Brigade Joins the ninth
Corps the 48 Regt is only about one mile
from our camp but I havent been there yacht
I dont know a gread deal to write this time
I will write more next time I am
well at presant and hope you are the
Same so no more at presant pleas
