Camp near Burkesville Junction Va.
May 14th 1865
Dear Mother
I received a letter from you
sometime ago and have
necolected to answer it untill
now I will try and write
a fiew lines but I scarsely
know what to write for I
exspect to get home soon
so that I needent to write
any more letter we have
been exspecting to go to Washington
long for [1] this but it takes them
a long time to get us started
we are the last Corps
out here in the field we
allways have had to do
all the dirty work and
I think thay mean to keep

us doing it to the last
end sins Lee surandered
we have been to Danville
a distance of about one
hundred miles while all
the other Corps was laying
still and now we are
scattered a long the railroad
clear from Danville to
Petersburg and all the rest
of the army is goen to
Washington and I spose are
getting mustered out
and I think our time will
come last and I think
we are able to Stand it
there has been an awful
change here in the state
of Virginia sins the
war is over the old citicens

are as friendly to our Soldiers
as the peope would be
up north. thay are coming
right down to the [date?] at
onst thay know that thay
are badly beat all
the trouble thay got now
is about there slaves
they are getting bothersome
the majority of the
ablebodyed Slaves runs a way
and leaves the small
onse behind that cant earn
there living yacht
and thoes that yacht
remain are getting so that
there masters are getting
afraid of there lives
there is more or less of
them comes here every day
to the General for atvice what to do

to day I was out a short
distance from here and got
a lot of Cherreys the chereys
are about getting good and
ripe here now I have eat
ripe strawbureys about
a week ago the negrows
are carrying them to our
camps by the basket full
and selling them to the soldiers
I think I must close my
letter for it is getting leate
I am well at presant and
hope you are the same
