Fortress Monroe Jan 5 th 1865
Dear wife
we went aboard the Steamship
Verona last night at Bermuda landing
and Run as far as city point and this
morning left for this plac and just
arived Here I dont know how long we Shall
Be Here But I guess not longer than tomorow
and we may go away to day I think we
are going Back to wilmington and we
Calculate to ocupy the land this time we
could Have done it Before if we would Ben
allowed to done it But old Butler wouldent
let us I dont know as I can get a chance
to male this letter Here But I will try
and if I cant mail it Here I will do it the
first chance I get Some Say we are going
to South Carolina But I guess we will go
where we was Before you may not Hear
from me for a good while But as soon
as we land at the plac I will write again
you must write ofener and direct to
Washington DC and they will folow us
