Railegh NC Apr 18th 1865
Dear wife
I thought I would drop
you a fiew lines and let you know
that I am well and I do Hope this
will find you and all the Rest of
the folks at Home the Same we
Broke camp at Faison Station
on monday morning the 10th of
April and took up our line of
march for Goldsborro to join Gen
Shermans Forces from there we
marched for Railegh the capitol
of north Carolina and arived Here
on the 16th day before yesterday
there is 6 army Corps Laying
Here now or near Here we are
Encamped one mile or a little more
from the city of Railegh General
Jo Johnson is laying Beyond
the City with His forces and we

are on Every side of Him with
three times as manny men as
He Has and its expected that He
will surrender His fources to Gen
Sherman to day and if He dont
He will Have to do worse for [Sherman?]
will Rake Hell our of Him if He
dont Surrender and as soon as
Johnson surrenders the war is
over for that will End the thing
I wont finish this letter until
tomorrow for I think By that
time I can tell you more about it
we Havent Had anny mail since
Before we left Faison Station
for our communication aint
opend yhet we are living on Half
Rations for our supplys cant get
to us fast Rnough But we Expect
to get plenty in a day or two
the 52 PV lays close to us there is
lots of Boys from Shawnee and

Wilkes Barre in it I saw John
Jenkins and Hen mast last
night the frace Boys are in it and
lots of fellers from Luzerne Co
miner Ransoms son Charley
is Here in the 15th ilinois Regt
and in fact Every Boddy is Here
Harvey Steel was drounded at new Bern
So the Boys in that Regt Sayes
I think the war will be soon over
I wouldent be surprised if we was
all Home by the 4th of July But we
Can tell Better in a fiew days I will
close until tomorrow there is no mail

I Recieved three letters
last night two from you and
one from unkle John Nesbitt
I was glad to Hear from Home

and glad to know that you
was all well I got post stanps
in Each of the letters unkle John
sent me 12 in His well mimy
the news came Here yesterday
that Abe Lincoln [1] Had Ben
murderd and it Kicked up
A devil of a noise amongst
the Soldiers they all Said if
Abe Lincoln Had ben murderd
they would kill Every man
woman and child in the
[Country?] [????????????] [2]
it was contradicted and [???]
Hope its not So there is no
news from Johnson this
morning He must surrender
in a day or two I must close
write soon Harry Nesbitt
- Lincoln died on the morning of April 15
- Badly damaged and soiled at fold
