July Sunday the 6th/62
Dear Wife
feeling as though I ought
to drop a few lines to you I thought
I would improve the present John
wrote day before yesterday and I
being buisey I got him to write that
I was well although not very Strong
last Monday I was not in the fight
but John was but one week ago last
Wendesday morning our Regt was
called in line of battle behind the
brest work and in that position
we remained that day and night
the next morning we were called
on to Scour the woods in front of
our breast work we did for about
two miles then we formed a new
breast work or in other words a new
Pickett line we held it that day and
night the next morning we were
called on to relieve annother
[Page 2]
Regt it being pretty hard feed for us
but Still what is the use of complain
ing when a persons hands are tied
Sunday morning I was detailed
to carry pots for the company by
So doing I got out of the fight on Monday
John was pretty near played out
when he come up with me he Started
for the Division Hospital but got
taken up by the provost guard and
sent back to the Regt he feels rather
old but Still he feels better to day
than I do I caught cold a few days ago
and brought on the Ague yesterday
morning I felt miserable yesterday
and not a great deal better to
day but the Ague was a great deal
lighter to day than yesterday I guess
I Shall have no more if I am
careful I am very weak but I think
I Shall Soon gain my stregnth if
I do keep off from duty but
Just as Soon as I am able to
[Page 3]
move around I will volunteer to
do duty we lay in front of the ene-
mies lines but the enemy does think
it not worth while to attack us for when
we retreated back to where we now
rest the enemy lost great numbers
in following us on our retreat So
much so that I guess they will not
trouble our lines although the 4th
of july but were Soon repulsed and
Skedadled McClellan’s Army had to
retreat on account of it being whiped
or in other words over powered by
the rebels in number although
they must have lost three to our
one I Suppose the papers will never
Say that McClellan was defeated for
fear that it may offend his magesty
he pretends that it was his intention
to do just as he did but I believe
he utters a falsehood when he
Say So They the boys do not
[Page 4]
have as much confidence
as they used to I must close
for I am getting very tiered
tell Norman that I will write
a long letter to him just as soon
as I get Smart I recieved a letter
from you this morning with
one dollar in money and was
very glad to hear from you and to
recieve the money for I was peney
less by letting John carry my money
he had spent a dollar if it being
ever cent but he being Sick he
could not eat the rations the
Government furnised him
when we Shall get our pay
God only knows we were just
going to recieve our pay as we
had to retreat it may be some
time now as we are in a hurly
bub if you can Spare a dollar more
