Camp near Harrisons landing
Dear Wife
Fearing owing to the
excitement that was prevelent at
the time I wrote before that my letter
did not go through I have taken
this afternoon hoping that if
that letter did not get through this
one would for I expect from a natural
consequence you would worry about
me owing to the great fight we had
on our retreat I told you in the other
that on monday I was not in the fight
on monday but was on friday before
if I had not been detailed on other bui=
=ness I should have been in for it was
not through fear that kept me out
nor is they any of the Regt thank
God that thinks so either for I never
yet have Showed the the white feather
[Page 2]
as yet and I hope I may not although
there are others that if I am any judge
played off I will not mention their names
for there is no use Wilson I guess got on to
the Sick boat and got off that way he had
better go and see miss Low if you want
to know any particulars just inquire of
Cornelia She can tell you enough to Sat=
=isfy any ones mind I thought I would
not say a word about it but they keep
up corrispondence all the time So I think
folks ought to know it he is not the per=
=son I took him to be and Should it be
gerneraly known in Rush what I know
he would not be thought the world off [1] in
that place but I Shall not Say no more
it will leak out in time for there is noth=
=ing mean but what will come out in time
and I should rather it would come out by some
other one than me or at least I will
wait awhile before I expose it to the
public but still I think I should do
[Page 3]
him and her both justice if I did it
but I hesitate for his friends Sake not for
his or her feelings for I think them both
worse than the brutes and I believe that
God will yet visit them both in judgment
for their misdemeanion and I care not
how soon for I think Such conduct
Should not go unpunished but enough
of this John is detailed for a quarter
master of the company So that excuses
him from all duty that is hard or
fighting if he could get his discharge
I should be glad for I think this buisness
is to hard for him as well as myself
but I think if now I am careful of
my health I shall get along well
enough but John is not agoin to
be fit for hard labor nor will
he have to do any hard work as
long as he holds the office he
now holds but that does not seam
to answer the contract for he
[Page 4]
would like to get off nor do I blame
him for it is a hard place for So
old a person as he is and health
So poor as his is but regardless of
his poor health he stands it far better
than I should think he could under
the present circumstances we are
nicely situated now about three
miles from the river and things looks
quite good here So much So that we
can rest day and night without being
molested that Seams nice for the last
Six weeks we have been molested
both day and night we have just
come in from off Pickett no enemy
was to be Seen in that section and
I hope we shall not be troubled
with them any more till we get
rested for I have Soldiered it so
long that I am geting wore out
and want rest and rest we
must have or we shall go under
[Page 5]
the Sod what rest we have had has
given us new life and vigor and
if we can have time the most of us
will recruit up but enough of this
Fred Hines is at hop home and if
it is So you can I wish you would Send
me two light Shirts for here we have
to wear woolen colered if you could get
them and one or two pair of light pants
for woolen feels most to heavy and
I expect he will be coming back one of
these days how soon I know not
you can get Some old or new Satchel
and Send them in it perhapse you
could Send them by Dallas you may
get two dozen of eggs and boil them
Slack done and bake me up Some
cake and do them up th for I
am in want of them very much
I wrote to Norman to Send me
[Page 6]
me Some pain killer if he Should
Send them I would be glad for I
think I stand in need of Some Such
medicines if I do not have Some
to take the water is So poor that I Shall
get the fever for the fever rages
to quite extent especialy the Ague
there is a great many cases of the last
mentioned diseases Should you think
of it send Some dried beef along
for that would taste good in this
dry country write as Soon as
you recieve this without delay
and Send along that dollar if you
have not sent it before we are to
draw two months or Should have
Said 4 months pay the next time
they owe me over four months and
a half pay due me now from the
Government I have recieved one
dollar from you write Soon good by
This from your Husband and best friend LA.G
to sabra and Clara Granger
