Curadsferry Oct 5th 1862
Dear Wife
It seams like a great privilidge to be blest
with the means to write with althoug the convenience
are not as good as might be but Still as for the con=
=veniences we can get along with if we only have the
material to do with and a little time is sufficient
for a Soldier there is not great news to write if there
is we do not get hold of them in this region of country
we hear nothing that is going on Seldom get the paper
and when we do we get no news things are kept
very Secret for some cause I hope for the best for
I think one Spell that the news of the movement of
the Army was to generaly known by both the rebels
and our men but now news are Suspended by some
one order perhapse Hallack I cannot tell it seams
that the old Gentleman is Secretary of war wll while
George B. has command of the united forces all I
have to Say is bully for that although I have felt
like cursing him in days that are gone but that day
is passed and I fell feel as though he was the man
to lead us on to victory or death I trust to victory for
I do believe that ours yet Shall prove Successful
[Page 2]
although we have had a dark place in history for
a Short time I hope yet it may lighten up and we soon
See a bright time in life I would to God this day that
the North & South could Settle there dificulties on Sat=
=isfactory terms to both parties but I fear that quite a Spell
will elapse before this thing will Satisfactorly be Settled
but perhapse the thing will be settled before we know
it but still I do not wory fearing that it will be closed
nor do I fear or worry much as either way trust in
God for the result hoping for the best if I am blest
with health and Strenght I Shall be thankful and feel
to praise him for his goodness I find there is nothing
like good health for it has been so long Since I have had
good health till the presents I think if cold weather comes
on my health will greatly improve cool air Seams to agree
with me first rate the winters are not so cold here but
a person can well Stand the weather without grumbling
but the warmest weather comes hard on me pershapse I
am notional if such is the case So let it be I feel So now
John health is very good but he is home Sick Some or
at least would like to See home first rate and who
would not he must have a heart of Stone if home
would not come acceptible at the present time after
being so long in the Service I have been and many
[Page 3]
other if I could but come home and Stay for two or
three weeks I Should feel Satisfied to come back and
Stay with the Army for quite a Spell the Captain Says
that we Shall have the priviledge of going home
this fall or winter all married men Shall certainly
have the priviledge of going home let the case go as it may
for my part I am bound to go home Some way if not
by fair means I will by foul but I guess I Shall get home
without any doubt. I suppose John will try to get home
first and undoubtedly will unless we both come home
to gether for he is the oldest man and the oldest one will
get home first as far as that is conserned I will not com-
plain for I am next to the oldest one in the company
we had older men than either but they have got their
discharge or are away at the Hospital Sick I guess there
but one older man than myself for John and that
man has been under the Doctors care all Summer
and now he is away at the Hospita l I think it is doubtful
of his return to the Regt I think he is rather playing out at the
best but Still I have no right to judge therefore I will Say no
more about it he knows and that is enough
As for Steve I have not Seen him Since we left
Arlington Heights but are in hopes we will Soon get orders
to move back or else that the rest of the Division will come
[Page 3]
up with us for I would dreadfuly love to See him and
all the rest of the boys from Susq & Bradford for they Seam
ed to be a good lot of boys or at least the most of them
did I would like to know where Orlo was for I would
write him a line if he never answered it I believe I
wrote last and I have written to all my friends last
Father & Mother White I have wrote Some three or four letters to them
Since I have recieved any from them Father & Mother Granger I
could not tell but a number they can tell and Still if I had time
I would not hesitate in writing to them again it is not because
I have in the least forgotten then that I do not write but knowing
that you live there they hear from me often from that Source
therefore that keeps me from writing to them I must write to
the friends at the river for it has been a long time
Since I have written I recieved a letter the day we left
Arlington Heights and I have not answered it yet Shame
me for being so negligent but Still I Shall try
to form some kind of an excuse for you know that
I will try to form Some kind of an apoligy for lazyness
will get Some Shield to cover her Slothfulness I think the most of the
time I have had a good excuse John has been blest with paper but
kept it from me or at least I did not know till now he has been
luckey for him for he used my postage Stamps for he has had none
of his own for over one month but those he used of mine and he
he has been very free with that that did not belong to him
when we recieved our pay he Sent all his money home that he
left for he owed Some twelve dollars in the company and he
Sent home forty dollars So all the money that was kept
was my money and he had a pocket boock So he kept
and spent it very freely till I found that he had but
three dollars left and nothing to Show but a watch a little
child would not been more [??????] than he was and
now if I get tobacco or anything I have to divide for
he has no money to get any with nor have I now but I
am bound to try to get along Some way till I get Some from home
Send me two more Shirts if you can and tell me what they
cost and write often this from your Husband and best friend
