May 9th Creek
Camp Near Potomac
Dear Wife
this makes the third letter I
have written Since we had the
fight the first letter did not get
out but I think the Second one
did without a doubt perhapse it
was detained on the way because
our letters are on such an occas=
=ion I hope you will not worry on
account of not recieving any letter
from me I know that is a natural
consequence a person will worry
when friends are far away and
you cannot get any tidings from
them but enough of this therefore
I will be brief in my letter as
I sent one yesterday and if I send
one to say it will be news enough
for once John wrote one to day
and so I thought I would but it
must be short for I want to
[Page 2]
help wash my Shirts for they
are all dirty my Arm is lame
So I cannot do much only help
with one hand I feel well as
far as health is conserned I feel as
though I could endure most any
thing without a murmer as long
as I feel as well as I now do in
my other letter I gave you an
account of the wounded and miss=
=ing that you was acquainted with
therefore I will not take the pains
of writing their names over again
I hope the missing ones will yet
turn up if so I shall be glad for
all is well that ends well as for
the fight I think it was as hard
a one as I ever witnessed for the
length of time it lasted I never
Saw the bullets fly faster or herd
them of course I did not see them
hail stones was no comparison
[Page 3]
therefore I could not give the subject
justice so I will say nothing more
about the matter but will try and
make a long matter or short
I will say thank God we are safe
from harm at the present how
long we shall remain Safe is more
than I can Say for my part I do not
worry for God never has put more
upon me than I have been able
to bear nor do I think he will as
long as I put my trust in him
would that I may ever rely upon
his promises for I find God never
changes but man is a changeable
being never to be reliad upon I
guess I will close my preamble
by saying I recieved two letters
from you yesterday it being
the first mail we had recieved
for about two weeks and no
mail has went out for the
[Page 4]
Same length of time therefore
it will seam a long time be=
=tween letters with you it was
with me but enough of this the
mail is about going out and I must
hurry
