May 14th Creek
Camp Near Potomac
Dear Wife
I thought I would take this
this morning to drop you a
few lines this morn hoping
you are enjoying the Same bl=
=essing that I enjoy that is good
health I enjoy the best of health
God has favored me of late with
the best of health John was gru=
=nting yesterday and day before
but last evening he made out
to get him a bottle of Whiskey
and I do not hear him complain
this morning I guess he has found
the medicine that Suits his dise=
=ase for Whiskey makes a different
man of him he can take as much
whiskey as the next man but enou=
=gh of this I should not be commen=
=ting on others faults for I have
enough of my own to look after
[Page 2]
without looking after others my
faults if I could See them in their
true light therefore I will Say
no more about that I recieved
three letters from you since I
came over the river two of them
had one dollar cash making two dollars
that I recieved from you I was Sorry
for I had recieved some money a
few days before from Steve as
he owed me and their Regt
had drew their money so I had
got some when that come I let
Wilson have most two dollars which will
come good now as he is wounded we dre=
=w our money day before yesterday and
yesterday I went down to Aquia creek
and Expressed forty eight dollars
home so you will find it at the
Express office Monterose you may do
what you think best with let
Father or Worden Some if they want
and be Sure and keep enough
[Page 3]
for yourself for it may be August
before we receive our pay again
Uncle Sam owes me most three
months pay yet perhapse we shall
get our pay in July but still I do
not look for it before August I sent
myself prety short thinking it
was better to send home for money
than to keep much with for if a
person fell in battle his money was
gone up but if it was at home
it was safe from the hands of the
Rebs I do not wish to give them
any thing but enough of this for
once I have no great news to write
this therefore I shall be brief as
I can for I am to lazy to enjoy
writing I used to think I love to
write but I am getting off that
notion for I am to lazy to set
up and write therefore I lay down
to it if you should see what lazy
person I am getting to be
[Page 4]
you would kick my Arss
I fell first rate my trust is in
God and I fear not what may
come for I feel if God be for
us who can be against us and
if God be against us who can
be for us I hope I may ever feel
happy in this love Set good exa=
=mples before my fellow man
I have a room mate or tent
mate who is a Proff Professor I
have some good times conversing
with him although he is a curious
man in many things but still
I believe he is a Christian as
for my coming home I believe
I shall come yet it seams so and
I cannot give it up nor Shall I
will I See different from what
I now See you must never get
discouraged but when trials come
go to God for comfort he is a pres=
=ent help in ever time of need
I must close by saying write soon
this from your Husband best friend
