May 20th
Creek
Camp Sickles near Potomac
Dear Wife
this morning finds me trying to
Scratch a few lines to you by the
way of letter I recieved a letter from
you night before last and was hap=
=py to hear from you and to hear
that you were well but Sorry to hear
that Clara was ailing Some times small
Sores makes large ones by neglect I hope
the next news I get from home that she
is better for I shall worry about it or her
till I hear from her I hope it will not
prove Serious nor do I wish her to
have a Stiff leg but still I cannot
have things my way if I could I should
leave old Va soil and travail north
where my friends live for I want
to see them and I am in hopes that
I shall be able yet to see my friends
in old Susq- I have the greater faith
[Page 2]
to believe that I shall See from home
yet although it may not be as soon
as I wish but patience and perseverence
accomplishes much if I could get home
I would be glad. Say to morrow would
Suit me better than to wait at the pres=
=sent they are So many wounded which
Should go home for I think they have
earnt their way home or at least
I do not bregretch them their happiness
As for Wes we have heard from
him he was taken prisioner
and sent to the parole Camp
he is not much consequence at
the best if he had not not been
paroled it would have been just
as well for the Army for I guess
he never was in a fight yet he left
in the morning and was not
seen after that I did not worry
about his being killed for I
was well aware if he was killed
it was done accidentaly for he run
[Page 3]
before the fight commenced I guess
I will say no more for he is nothing
but a chipher at the best he is nothing
but a hog all but the Brusles and
I guess those has started but enough
about relation I will say what little
I have to say and be very brief I
have got quite a notion these days
writing short letters for I have so many
to answer these days my friends
write letters about these times Orbo
& Miles wrote to me the other day they
have been very negligent about writing
but they made many excuses for their
delay and Said that here after they
would be more punctual here if
what ails Norman I cannot say
for it has been five months Since
he has written to me I have wrote
Some three but have recieved no
answer from them if I have said
or done anything to him that has
offended him I have done it ignor=
[Page 4]
=antly I am Sorry that I have done it
I hope he will look over it and tell
me where in I have offend So I can make
amends for it I think he should bay up
no hardness for if I have offend I have
done it ignorantly but enough of this for
if I have offended he knows in what I cant
say As for Philander he is doing first [rate]
I think he will soon get home on a fur=
=lough I suppose his Mother will be glad
to see him he was a good boy I liked
him he bore acquaintance good steve is
good enough but he is most to rough
to suit me I am sorry he delights in tak=
=ing the name of his God in vain but
such seams to be his cut out but I noticed
over in the fight on sunday he could tal=
=k without swearing it is a very foolish
habit for any one to get into I know I
have found it so and thank God I was
induced to leave it off I enjoy my mind
first rate my bodily health is good ex=
=cepting the Piles which do not make me
sick at heart but should the Regt be called
on to move I should have to go to the Hospital
because I could not march I may go to
the Hospital in less than a week if we are
called on to move Tell Norman I should be
glad if he would send me that pen if he has
not I would be glad if you would send me
some postage stamps for I have none nor
can I buy them here write often and I
will do the same This from your Husband
and friend L.A. Granger
