Camp of the 57th Regt
Dear Wife
I thought I
would drop a few lines to
you by the way of letter alth=
=ough I must confess that the
chance for Sending letters
looks very doubtful for we
are on the move and at such
times are generaly prety scaly
times to send letters but I
will write and trust luck
for a chance we have been
on a march almost two
weeks we have recieved mail
once in the time that was
the next morning after we
Started and they said the
mail went out once in the
time whether it did nor not
is more than I can Say but
[Page 2]
I guess it did but the chance
that we have now is very slim
but enough of this I suppose you
have herd that the Rebs were
in Penn but I guess that they
will not amount to much for
if old Penn cannot turn out
enough men to whip out all
the Rebs that are in that place
I am Sorry if we have good luck
we hope to be enough for the
Rebs in this place if God be for
us who can be against us and
if he be against us who can
be for us I think this will deci=
de the contest I hope it may
for I am getting sick movving
from place to place I have
had great faith and Still have
faith for I think we are in
the right and if we are of
course we will prosper in
times although that time may
[Page 3]
not arived when our Arms are
to be successful God has his own
apointed time for all things
and when that time arives all
things will work together for good
I believe that this war is calculated
from the commencement although
that is Saying a great deal wick=
=edness has brought this upon us
therefore we must stand it alth=
=ough it looks hard that So many
should suffer for the Sins of
a few but enough of this I must
write a short letter for there is
no great news to write this time
and perhapse I shall carry it till
it gets wore out before I get a
chance to send it but I will
trust luck for that and will
send it if I have a chance
for I know you will feel
anxious to hear from us as
for my it never was better
[Page 4]
Johns’s health is good Steve
is strong never enjoyed better
health Den Gregory has got smart
again I herd from Warren
White he is getting smart I have
not seen seth yet but John’s
has he says he looks as fat as
a bear and just about as black
his time will soon be out
and then I suppose he will
return home you must
excuse all mistakes and
poor writing and write
soon
