Columbus Miss
August the 1st 1862
Dear Father & Mother I a gain take
my pen in hand to drop you a few lines
to let you know tha I am well enjoying
fine helth and hope when this Reaches you It
will find you the Same when you recieve
this I want you to write to me and let
me heare from you all and hear how you
all are getting and how your Crops Is
getting on whether you have had any Rain
or not yet we have plenty of Rain
hear It has been Raining hear to day
and Corn that did not look like making
a grain when I first Came har Is making
first straight Corn I hope you all have
had plenty of Rain with you all I Saw
phillip Crawford on day before yesterday and he
Said that they had not had any Rain when
he left I was Surprised to hear Such as that
for I thought that It had Rained ther
before this time Well we are getting on finly
hear we dont have much to do hear only
drill a little and that aint verry hard we
only drill 3 times a day and we get plenty
to eat and we also have a good Chance to
get our washing don there are plenty of
Negroes Comes in Camps every day to get

our Clothing and they wash and Iron
them for tenn Cents a peace and they
do It nice a noughf for any person to
ware and we also have the Chance of
getting Chickens eggs and some Butter
But we have to pay a good price for them
we Can get Chickens at four Bits a peace
and eggs at four Bits a dozen and Butter
at the same a pound we like finly well
we will be paid off in a few days we
will get our Bay on tomorow I expect and
If we do I will have a Chance of Sending
some home By Mr Foster I will Send It
in Care of Frank Simmons to Bahala
well when I written to you before there
was a Chance of our moving from hear
But there are no talk of It more Some
Say that we will move to vicksburge
and Some Say to Camp [move?] But I
expect we will Stay wright hear a good
while to guard the Town we have got a
good many Prisners hear and It takes
a good many men to do the guarding
I hear that we are having a good many
fights in Cantucky and masauria and
a good many in Verginia and we have
been Succesful in every one yet we have
taken Bowling green Back and a grate
amny of them [towns?] in Cantucky

Well all of the Tupello Troops are moved
to Chattanooga Tenn they are passing hear
every day there ware about 3 hundred
waggons Based hear in the last 3 or 4 days
Well there was a good many Sick
hear when I Came hear But they are getting
well the health of the Soldiers Is improving
a gratedeal heare this is a nice place
hear and we have good watter hear
Well I written uncle Nip a letter a bout
too weaks a go and have not Been able
to hear from him yet I would like to
hear from him when you See him
tell him to write to me I have a good
Chance of having my Dogartype taken and I
will have I t taken and Send It to you
Well I Believe that I have told you all
that I Can Recolect at present I will Come
to a Close for present hoping to hear from
you Soon tell Alexander to write and
Sis to nothing more at present tell the
Childeron to Be good Vhilderon and Study
hard and learn fast I Remain your
True Son untill Death
