Camp Davis Ford va
Febuary 2nd 1862

Miss Sallie
I receved yours
of the 25th Dec. and answered it in
a few days after I sent my letter
by Mr Light one of our company
who was discharged and coming
home, I have never receved any
answer to it and I expect he
lost it and you never receved
it. Dr Crump is going to start
home in the morning and I will send
this by him. we are still in camp
at Davis Ford. and no prospect of
a fight soon. The wether has been
verry cold for some time and we
have had a great deel of snow & rain
witch has made the roads allmost
[page 2]
impassable therefore we expect no
attact by the enemy before Spring.
but the general Supposition is we
will have plenty of fighting to do
then, I hope so, and may god
speed the time. I want us to whip
out the yankies and come home
for I am verry tired of
camp life. we have nothing to do
but lye up here in camp &
make fires and sit by them &
that dont suit me I like something
more exciting.
I should have liked
verry much to have spent the winter
at home but tis not but three
months and six day. untill our
time is out. and then we will be
free once more, I expect to bid
fare well to Old Virginia, and when
I go to the wars again. I will go to
Kentucky or Missouri, & then I will
be closter to home, and it will be
[page 3]
more convenient to get things from
home. I have nothing more that
will Interest. the health of the
company is verry good at present
and your Sweetheart is well. Mr D. W.
Mr W H Short sends his respects
to you and says he Intends to
cultivate your acquaintance when he
gets home. he is a verry nice
young man and you had better set
your cap for him.
I will close
after asking you to write soon &
excuse my letter. I promise to do
better in future
I am with respect
Your constant Friend
M Clanton
