Miss Jane
as i have thoug
ht of writing to you many times & I
have neglected it so long that I
am almost ashamed to commence
though I hope you will excuse my
negligence though I have thought it my
duty almost as much to write to you
as to any of my relation & to think
of times that have long past & gone when
all things was at piece & when I was
qite a Boy could run over to Ant
Janes & be at home if i could only recall
such days even at this time instead of being
in this horible war I would thinks
that I was living a Kings life
though I think it my duty So it goes

very easy with me i cant grumble
though we have a great many hard ships
& dangers to undergo
Mis Jane we are all well & doing
very well at this time & I hope whn
when this come to hand it may find
you in the best of health we are
above the city of Fredricksburg on
on the River we are Kept on picket
all the time –
Times are [quilt?] hear & peacible we are
very clost to them very small River between
us we very often talk to Each other
Change tobaco for coffee they are
very ancious for peace they think this
war will soon end which I hope will
be true for us to my past I am tired
enough of it I went to git back
home once more I am very tired living
in the woods
