Camp Batle Field Tennessee
Dear wife and
childern
It is with grate Pleasure
that I take mi pencil
in hand to let you no that
I hant very well nor havent
bin since I came from home
I have apane in mi Brest all
the time I hant abel for duty
at this time but I am going
about all the time I received your
leter to day and was glad to hear
from you youre leter was dated
March the 26 witch made it
Sixteen on the rode this is too
leters I rote to you since I got
one from you we are still on
the battle ground camped with
out tents oure wagens and

hant ketched up with us
yet yet the ded men
and horses stinks so bad
that we cant hardly stand
it the ded is about all
bered but that are ondly
eighteen inches under the
ground and tha still stink
I will tell you how we live
here we have afew poles
fixt up and our oul cloths
on them and a few brush
to lay on and it ranes
every nite we hafto cary
our grub too miles thrugh
the mud and you beter
beleve that we have hard
times but I think that beter
times is coming we have two
hundred thousand men here
now this was the hardest
battle that ever was faught
in the united States

I never want to se such
a site agane we had sixteen
thousand men cild here and
the rebels had thirty thousand
cild I sene the ded Soldiers
on the ground that I cold
walk on them for agrate
ways but we whiped them
out but the rebels faught
like tigers when the batle
was gong on the Canon
and guns made such anoise
that aman cold not here
him self talk and the treas
fauling all around us that
the Canon balls cut
off I sene wher one canon
ball went through six men
and they all fell in one
pile I sene horses that
had there heds shot off
clost to there sholders
and put the hole site

that I sould be mad because
you did not pay Dan any
I think you done just
