Lagrange, Tennesee
Dear Catherine to day is sunday
and I thought I would write you
a few lines to let you know
that I am well I did not get a letter
from you this weak I dont know
what was the reason for some of the
boys got letters that was mailed
at solsbery last saturday but my
letter did not come I have nothing
to write to you I have saw a
good many soldiers going to vicks
burg for the last few days some
thinks that we will have to go
there yet but I hope we wont
have to go thare this summer for it
is warm enough here I dont
want to get any further south
this summer
[page 2]
there is a large fort on <hands?>
at this place. there is between
fore and five hundred darkies at
work on it there is twenty
five or thirty acres in it we
have eight Pieces of cannon
here and a good many infantry
and cavalelry here I dont think
there is any danger of a fight
here soon I think if grant takes
vicks burg the fighting will soon
be over but I fear he will loose
a great many men and not tak
the place at last if he gets
whipped thare as bad as Hooker
did on the Potomac it will be
a long time before Peace is made
and I fear he will be for
vicksburg is a strong place
and they have got lots of men
thare and they will fight hard
[page 3]
to save the place
I think I will get home this
summer on furlow I want to
come to see you all ones more
Bless My sweet children I
wood love to see them so well
if I get to come home
it will be in august we
have a butiful camp here and
has plenty to eat and wear
and see fine times here our
Regt has a good deal of garding
to do but they are in good heart
and well satisfied there is
still some sick yet in the
Regt but the health is
tolerable good I will
have to close and male
this or I will be too late
for to mail this to day
[page 4]
Catharine dont fail to
