D. M. Hitt Letter

D. M. Hitt was from Cherokee County, Georgia and served as a private in Co. A, 43rdGeorgia Infantry.He enlisted on March 30, 1862 and died in a hospital in Atlanta on July 5, 1862.His letter is written both to his brother, Benjamin C. Hitt, and to D. M. Hitt's wife, Jane A. Hitt. The letter is “backed” to Jane A. Hitt and postmarked Chattanooga, May 29, 1862. The Hitts can't be located in the Census of 1860, but are listed in the 1880 Census for Cherokee County, at which time B. C. was 53 and Jane was 49. According to the Census, Jane could not read or write.
