Camps Near Winchester Va July, 16th 1863

Dear Ma
I take my pen in hand this
morning for the purpose of writing you
afew lines to informe you that I am well at
this time and I hope when this gets to you
that it may find you and the family the
Same I would of writen to you before now
but we have bin marching we have bin
in mary land and Pennsylvania and
when we got thair we had some mity hard
fighting to do I was in all of them but One
we had five batles and I was in 4 of them the
last day we fought I got Struck on the head
with aminie ball but it did not hurt me
much it made my head ache Some time
Our Regment got Cut all to Peacs we went
in to the fight with 6 hundred men and
we brought out 2 hunded Wee got orders to
Send our wounded all Back and I think that
Ransome was taken Prisner for he could not
walk he was not in the fight he got his
leg Spraind afew days before the fight
and we had to leave him beehind I hope
that he will Come up in afew days we got

11 Wounded in my Company and too Kild dead
on the field it was hot times I Saw F W Pool
yesterday he Came out all rite We taken
7 thousand Prisners that I Saw and the report
was that we had got 2 or 3 more thousand I cant
tell how many the yanks taken from us
Our Armey is mity badly cut up I think
that we will have to Recrute up now
well that is all the nuse I have got to write
you must write to me as soon as you get
my letter and give me all the nuse
And I want you to Send me agood fine comb
in youre next letter Write Soon give
