Camp Marian Cockle Town
           the
November 20 1861
Dear Mother
I recieved your letter
yesterday and you dont no how
glad I was to hear from you all
I have sent one to Father but
it has not had time to reach
him yet but I hope it will
I got one from him the same
time I got yours now Dear
Mother I dont want you to
think that you hurt my feelings
About the Ambrotypes for you
did not the reson I wanted
to no which one you had was
that you Told me before I left
to send it to you and you said
you had rather have it with
out my uniform on but you
said you wanted it any way
you could get it I had it
taken in and without uniform
and sent them to you so you
could suit your self but the
one with the black coat in

was the prettyest one it was the
prettyest one that I ever saw taken
I thought you would take it
and I Just wanted to no if you
did But my Dear Mother I am
satisfide A bout them Dear
Mother I will now give you
some bad news About what
happen to our legion lately it
was ordered of[f] down below bethell
it was A bout 12 miles from
camps in the enmys country when
they were exspecting to be fierd in
to eary minit and they were
put in to A line of battle
and there was two men wrode
in sight they were taken to
be yakees pickets they had to
pase right by the legion they
were on horse back and they
went like lightning the whole
legion shot at them one of
them was killed and when they
shot Capt Morris horse run
in front of the legion so did
Major Baglys and Capt Morris
got shot in the hand and his

horse got killed from under him
Mager Bagly got shot dead James
got his horse killed and John
Rodgers got his leg shot of[f] and
Several more of the officers
got there horses killed Dear
Mother they had to march 7
seven miles through mud and
water up to our neas in A
thick swamp it give them fits
shore Dear Mother Please write
to me often I will write to you
all once A weak Dear Mother
Try to content your self for I
think that I will get to sea
you between this and January
They are going to commence
giving furlows now soon and
I am going to get one as soon
as I can and come to see you
all Dear Mother you told me
to be a good boy I must say
to you that I now think more
of doing better than I ever did
But Mother I must come to
A close I remain your loving
