Lynchburg va July 18 th 1862 My
dear wife & children farther & mother &
brothers & Sisters I am not well but I think
I am getting better at last I am in hops So
I hav apain in my right Sholder & rite lines [1]
& Some boils on my back & under my
arm which givs me much pain if it
was not for that I would bee doing very
well the dr has quit giv me any fisic
only he rubs my Sholder with turbentin
but I dont believe it dos any guod I hope
this lines my find you all well Carie
I dont know what to write I hav wrote So
much I write every three dayes to you besid
what I write to others I wrote to Sam &
William day befor yesterday & to Ed &
mother yesterday John Pee[k] left about
three dayes ago for the regiment but
I dont think he was abele he is vry weak
I dont know whir our regiment is Some
ses it is at richmond Some Ses at
gordonsvill the yankey ar in about forty
miles of gordonsville they ar at orang
cort house Janral Jackson has bin
promted to a ful Jenral I heard Sad
nuse a few dayes a go george singer wrote
from richmond to his Son John ho was
in this place Sick that my company

was in the fight at richmond & three
got kild three got mortally wonded
& twenty Slightly wonded I dont
know hwo they wer carie I hav taken
up two bad habits sens I left home that
is Smokin & drinkin I Smoke three times a
day the Dr givs me a drink of whisky
three times a day I think it helps me mor
than any thing I can duo it seames to
strempling [2] me & gives me a apetit to eate
Carie I hav fell off fifteen lbs Sens
I left Savannah John Pee[k] has fell off twenty
lbs Carie I know if you was to See me
you would want to kiss me my
mush tash luoks so sweate they all
wais get the first drink they bother
me vry much carie I wish I had
brought your ambrotype with me
I cant hear from you I want you
to write if you pleas I hav nvr
heard from you Sens I left ga
I think I hav wrote you eight or ten letters
sens I left Savannah but I cant her from you
give my best love to all the connection & all
enquirens friends if thir bee any & except a due potion
your self kiss them sweate little babs for
me go[o]d by one & all direct your letter
