Winchester va Sunday September 14 the 1862
My dear wife I am in the land of the living yet but
not well I left livingston a weake tomorro will bee a wake
I rode on the car a bout Sixty miles & march a bout
Sixty as guod luok would hav it I struck up with
my captin & lieutenan Patterson we Struck up with
a tran of waggons going to ouer army if we hadent
we never could of stuod the march we hav got to
march march thurty or forty miles now befor
we get to ouer army they ar ovr in mary land
& the yankey betwen us and them we ar Stop
hear I dont know how long we will Stay
hear ouer company was in the fight six or seven
got wonded or kild ben Walker got kild
I dont know whether I can evr Stand the march
to the regiment or knon I am not well nor never
expect to as long as this war last I hav never
sean a well day Sens I taken the measels
I think my lun[g]s ar affected I hav a sevr
pain in the pit of my Stimmac & pains
in my hips & legs I dont think I can evr
keep up with the regiment I hav not
heard from Sam & william Sens the
fight if you hear let me know if
you pleas I Saw william Jones a bout
a weake befor the fight he luoke harty
but I learn he got kild carie if you
get the chance send me them cloes if
you pleas I wish I was with you today

could bee with you & the children one
one month I could sorter get along
but the lord only nose when we
will meate I am vry ancious to hear from
you I have not heard from you sens I left
Lynchburg that has bin fiv or six wakes
& it is a vry hard matter to get off a male
or get a mail I hope thes few lines may
find you all well I want to write
